All right, converged communicators. You’ve seen the game and you’ve seen the ads. Now, it’s time for the fun part.
As we all know, advertising is a big – and quite prominent – part of the communications field. And there’s no bigger arena for advertising than the Super Bowl, no matter what Roman numeral comes after it. But with that big arena comes big costs – and big risks. A lousy ad on ordinary programming is usually forgotten quickly. But a lousy ad on the Super Bowl not only represents millions of dollars down the drain – it also can be a genuine negative for the brand and product. Any way you slice it, that hurts.
What were some of the commercials that got your attention during the game? Some of the best? Some of the worst?
(Personally, I would have to nominate the first-quarter Maserati ad for the last category. Trying to sell a wildly expensive product that few people can afford by way of the mass-audience Super Bowl = bad idea.)
