For converged communicators looking for the link to John Berger’s BBC documentary Ways of Seeing (Exercise 4), the link is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pDE4VX_9Kk. This is part of the Assembling Digital Media course, and there’s a quiz for the documentary in Blackboard.
The show illustrates many of the effects of the camera on changing the perception of paintings and images, as well as some of the ways that reproduced images can be employed for purposes entirely different from their creators’ original intentions. The material is all subtitled, so it’s very easy to follow along with the main ideas of the production. It’s worth thinking about the next time you read a news article about a painting being sold for millions of dollars at auction.
