How fast does news travel today? Answer: Really fast. Today’s social media enable news to cross the world at breakneck speeds. And, in addition to speed, Twitter gives prominent people from around the world a chance to respond to developing events in real time. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry may have millions of followers on Twitter, but their Tweets (gasp!) might not really be the most important. Some of these shown below, however, carry more weight. These Tweets come from a slew of international officials, reflecting public opinion on the unfolding violence in Ukraine.
David Cameron, British prime minister:
Stephen Harper, Canadian prime minister:
John McCain, U.S. senator:
William Hague, British foreign secretary:
Catherine Ashton, head of the European Union External Action Service (in charge of EU foreign security affairs)
