If you’re like many converged communicators, you’ve thought about your time in Assembling Digital Media and wondered: A lot of this blog work was fun, but will it ever be useful? The answer, you’ll be pleased to know, is yes. Here’s a quick exercise that’s likely to give a bit of encouragement, and show some ways that WordPress blogging skills are put to use in the real world.
First, sign in to your WordPress account to view your home page. Then, without signing out, type in the URL http://www.time.com to travel to the home page of TIME magazine. (Yes, that TIME.) You’ll notice that the black WordPress bar is still visible at the top of the screen. Why is that? That’s because TIME, like many other publications and professional websites, uses a variant of the WordPress platform. In this case, it’s WordPress VIP, a high-end web service that is designed for serious businesses – even those as serious as the nation’s most well-known news magazine. Of course, WordPress VIP isn’t the same as the free WordPress system that we’ve used in class – it includes many advanced features that aren’t available on the free model. Still, the TIME website is built from the same essential building blocks as our own blogs for DIG3286. So wherever your career path leads, you can feel confident that the experience gained managing WordPress blogs here will be in demand in the outside business world.
