  • What is your name: Clayton Freeman
  • What is the purpose of the Media Analysis Journal: The media analysis journal will survey the fast-changing trends in communication, providing insights, evaluations, and links to resources from newsmakers and commentators from across the field.
  • What do you do/want to do: Right now, I’m working for the Florida Times-Union in the Sports and Outside departments. It’s an exciting job that gives me the opportunity to cover sporting events from all across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia – soccer, football, basketball, or anything else that’s going on. It’s primarily (but not exclusively) high school sports, but also includes major events like international soccer games at EverBank Field. Starting in December 2013, I’ve been busy with the Outside section, highlighting outdoor destinations across the First Coast such as skeet shooting at the Jacksonville Skeet & Trap Club. I also work to format agate page information (schedules, results, and similar information) on the sports desk. I hope to use my experience in the Converged Communications program to gain a broader understanding of aspects of communication across multiple disciplines.
  • Where are you from: I’m a fifth-generation Jacksonville resident living in Arlington.
  • What is the best book you’ve ever read? Why: A New Cambridge Edition (1939) of the collected works of William Shakespeare, including absolutely everything – the sonnets, the obscure plays, the not-so-obscure plays, all the way up to the giants like Hamlet and Macbeth. Plus, it was free – thrown away by the Duval County school system years ago. That book has given me hours of joy – and a serious education in English literature – from my high school years to the present day.
  • What makes you happy: Seeing new places across the Southeast, getting projects done and seeing the results published in the paper, enjoying the excitement of World Cup years (like this one). Increasingly, having the opportunity to learn more about the diverse fields of communication and working with my fellow converged communicators in the FSCJ program.
  • What makes you mad: Sustained sub-freezing weather. Rude, mean, nasty behavior – for example, Internet comments gone bad. Unnecessary red tape, especially when mingled with an unhealthy dose of stupidity.
  • What is your idea of a fun day: It might require a bit nicer weather than we’ve got right now, but I love cruising along obscure county roads in old Florida, stopping at a local restaurant somewhere, then taking a look at the natural wonders – beaches, forests, lakes, and the multitude of places that make our state special. Then, to top it off, a trip to a high school football game with all of the stat-keeping and rapid-fire reporting that goes along with it. Many people in the sportswriting field detest it; I love it, and when the editor calls after the final whistle to say, “We need 300 words in the next 10 minutes,” I know how to get the job done.
  • What’s the one thing in the world you think you probably know way too much about: I’m a soccer statistics fanatic – I’ve compiled club and individual statistics for every season in the history of the professional leagues of Germany and Spain, as well as information on World Cup tournaments dating to the first event in 1930. Yes, this is tedious (and borderline insane).
